Natural Light and the curse of Manual Exposure!

My comfort zone with daily photography is in "Program" Mode. It is kind of a cheat way to take photographs, as the camera does it's automatically selects Aperture and Shutter Speed, without triggering the flash. It's the most semi-automatic mode on the higher end digital SLR cameras, like my Nikon D300.

I often reading articles on how to better use my camera and to drill into my thick skull the little lessons and nuances about not just creating a "correct" exposure, but in creating consistent results of "artistic" exposure. Sometimes it seems a fine line, and often is! What my tastes are for a particular shot might not match another photographer's mood for a particular scene.

Thursday evening, I took my camera out in our suburban backyard and tried to find some creative lighting to make some ordinary objects appear a little more special. I shot in manual mode and captured multiple shots, each at different exposures. It's amazing how much of a different feel each image can portray with a little more or less light. I find that some of my favorite photos actually have a light source in the background, although carefully positioned so that my photos are not over-exposed.

It takes some practice to find the best objects to meter light from (using the built in light meter) so that you obtain a "natural appearing" dynamic range. Even with all the advances in camera technology, cameras still can only process a portion of the dynamic shadow and highlight ranges that humans see with the naked eye. It takes some artful-dodging to capture the best range for each shot. :)

Enough of my technical banter, here are a few pictures from my backyard ramble to go along with my blog ramble tonight! :)

Jeremy's BIrthday Party - Part 2

I often take so many photos at family events, that some of them seem more appropriately grouped together in sub-categories. About a week or so ago, I posted pictures of my nephew's birthday party when we visited Jenkinson's Boardwalk. Later, there was a whole carnival themed party back at the house for the kids with a cotton candy machine, Ice Cone Maker, Popcorn cart, etc. It was a lot of fun for us adults, too!

Nothing fancy with this photo-set; just some great family pictures. :)

Simple pleasures...

My sister hass a wonderfully stocked kitchen with so many goodies, we all refer to it as the "Candy Shoppe". :) Pretty much any type of chocolate or jellie or sweet you could want is available in some form or another. It makes for some vacation time binging, that's for sure!

We had a nice sunny day last Saturday and I made good use of some indirect afternoon sun and a triangular diffusion screen to capture some of her more iconic treats and garden vegetables. :) I will make a set of square photos of these. :)

Might as well JUMP!

A fun little session this weekend at home with my niece Kaleigh and a little help from my sister with extra lighting gear. I wanted to see if I could "freeze-frame" some jumping shots, by having my niece jump off a chair to my right. I meanwhile had hte camera low to the ground so that each jump looked higher. I hope you enjoy the pics!

P.S. I snuck one scary picture of myself in there, because have to try out my techniques, too!

See all the pictures here!

My other resume...

Anyone who has hung out with me for more than 30 minutes has probably been regaled with an animated delivery of me talking about one of my hobbies. My wife says I get wild eyed and a silly smile and I wave my hands all around in the air in my excitement of telling my friends (read: ANYONE) my latest story.

Lucky, if you get to hear about my photography experiences. Not so lucky, if you have to hear about my video game experiences! :D My wife Vanessa has learned second hand about World of Warcraft and other games, enough that she could likely be an author on one of the strategy guides. She is so patient and lets me tell her although I do catch the occasional eye roll!

Think about this; I must have one of the most impressive video game resumes available. Born in 1981, I had the original Nintendo by age 5, soon to follow with hand-me-down systems like the Coleco-Vision, Atari (various models) and Intelivision (with the rollerball paddles!)

Later, my brother and I got the original 20 lb Gameboy, a Super NES (which the Super Mario World commercial BLEW our little minds with its 16 bit glory!) followed, of course, by the Nintendo 64 (I LOVE YOU GOLDENEYE GAME CARTRIDGE! I must have logged 100s of hours in multiplayer with my brother, back when I could actually beat him at shooters!)

Enter the world of PlayStation, to which the Final Fantasy series moved. Later in 1999 my friends got PlayStation 2 with TimeSplitters. The loading times were HORRIBLE, but the extras and play control were great. :)(See!? I'm smiling excitedly just talking about this!). I have since owned at least 3 PlayStation 2s in various conditions.

For a brief time in colleage I played on the GameBoy Advance, but console systems were moving ahead much faster than handhelds.

After college in 2003, I discovered how much fun Ebay and Half.com, in coordination with the best videogame review site (www.metcritic.com) to purchase ALL of the old systems I never had and now had money to buy! WHEEEE!! As the system race stabilized for a few years, there were TONS of amazing games I had never tried.

So, I bought a GameCube and since about 30 games, got an Xbox and the Halo serios (also a sweet DVD player).

As a birthday present in 2008 I got my Gameboy DS, which helped pass all those hours when we weren't sleeping on our Honeymoon flight to Hawaii!

Concurrently, in 2003, the first purchase I made with my first corporate paycheck was a new computer. The 2nd generation Dell XPS, which came in a MONSTER sized case. It was the top of the line computer for it's day. Enter the alternate life of MMOs. I've played Star Wars Galaxies (before it was ruined), Final Fantasy XI and later found my addiction with World of Warcraft; also called Vanessa's bane-of-existence!

I also have beta tested 4-5 games including LOTRs online, Dransik (later Ashen Empires), League of Legends (which is still one of my favorites), StarCraft 2 and other smaller games like Maple Story, Mytheon, etc.

My latest system additions have been my PlayStation 3 and my Nintendo Wii. I have some games for both that I play solo and online, but I find that my "pwning" skills do not quite match the 11-14 year olds that DESTROY me at games like Call of Duty. It is embarrassing when they taunt me at the end of the round with their headsets about how many times they killed, "Snuggler". O_o I guess I had my day in the sun with pre-pubescent reflexes and must now accept that the kids are faster than me!

Wow. Video games are like old girlfriends or songs you love. You might not remember all the details, but I bet you never forget the feeling of being so excited about something. (Go ahead, laugh. I know there are a few other nerds out there who know what I'm talking about!)

So, I have played a majority of top games over the last 24 years of my life. Too bad I can't earn a paycheck with THAT resume!

Jenkinson's Boardwalk - Jeremy's Bday - Part 1

Hello again family!

This blog makes it so much easier to share pictures with you! I hope that you are all getting a chance to come visit the site. :)

Today's post contains photos from Jenkinson's boardwalk, where we took the kids for a few hours as part of my nephew's birthday party. The boardwalk is a great place for capturing colors and the kids are so excited that it makes for a really easy photoshoot!

Below are a few pictures and the link to the full album. :) Enjoy!

Jeremy's Birthday - Jenkinsons

Kira & Gabriella Birthday

Hello Everyone!

I took photos for my nieces at their shared birthday party in April 2010. The girls got to go horseback riding and groom/pet the horses. It was a lot of fun to watch all the kids. :)

I am posting a few images below; you can click to the full gallery to see them all!

World Cup + NYC

So many new formatting options on Blogger! I love how all the technologies are linked in to one another. it really makes sharing information soooo easy.

I have decided to post a few pictures on this site again to try out some of the features. These photos are from the previous weekend that we spent BBQ-ing with my brother and wife's family during the day and hopped a train to NYC for the evening to go out with my sister. It was a great weekend.

I hope you enjoy these few shots I got.
